In order to implement the educational philosophy of the new curriculum standards and deepen the integration of chemistry with real life, the Chemistry Department of the Junior High School Department of the east campus successfully held a fun water purification competition, during which students actively participated and unlocked the mysteries of chemistry through practical operations and competitions.
First and foremost, before the competition, the chemistry teachers gave a special lecture on the core principles of water purification, the standard operating procedures for experiments, and safety precautions, guiding students to search for relevant information and design water purification plans in advance. Accordingly, students made full use of readily available materials at home and independently designed a layered filtration structure, some of whom innovated their designs while considering practicality and environmental protection concepts.
Furthermore, on the competition field, students precisely assembled the filtration devices, placing the filter materials in layers according to the proportion, and slowly pouring in the turbid water sample and meticulously observed the entire filtration process. In the meantime, everyone was focused and their movements were skillful, who carefully dealt with problems such as filter material blockage and incomplete water filtration during the practical operation, optimizing the plan through collaboration and experimentation. Therefore, the competition site was in perfect order. Not only were there the focused figures of the students, but also the professional guidance of the chemistry group teachers.
Last but not the least, teachers selected non-participants from each class and gave them scores based on multiple aspects such as the scientificity of the plan design, the standardization of the equipment setup, and the quality of the water purification. More remarkably, teachers of each class provided real-time answers and explanations on the spot, and corrected the non-standard operations step by step, thus making this competition a vivid live teaching lesson.
To conclude, chemistry originates from life and is used in life. Not only did this water purification competition enable students to consolidate the relevant chemistry knowledge about water purification, enhance their practical skills and problem-solving abilities, but also instilled the environmental protection concept of conserving water and protecting water resources. Thus, the Chemistry Department of the Junior High School Department of the east campus will continue to use interesting practical activities as the carrier, innovate teaching methods, allow students to learn through practicing and understand through practicing, truly achieving the integration of knowledge and action, and making the chemistry subject shine with its unique educational brilliance!
